AHIFS.

(Another hiker in favor of Snickers.)

I shop by nutritional content as I figure nothing I eat up there tastes too good, and I'm never really hungry. I look for the highest calorie and protein content per ounce, which invariably is provided by products containing peanuts.

Re: Pemmican.

I tried "hardtack" too, but kept having nightmares about getting scurvy...

Snickers or Whatchmacallit

Snickers also has a energy bar now - Snickers Marathon

Thanks for the link Giga mike, wonder if they are any good, worth a try.
I also vote for snickers bars. The large size are too big for me, so I buy the bags with the two to three bite sized snickers in them, like the ones you get on Halloween (that reminds me , time to raid the kids candy bowl smile ) I carry gu gels too and use them when I or someone in my group is crashing.
We brought Lindt Chocolate on our last summit and ate a huge bar on top, nothing like gourmet chocolate when you have summited and need the extra boost to get down, my brother in-law still talks about it.

Re:BobR & EricB

BobR(There's a reason you're member #13 and I am #637) you hit the nail on the head when you said your mainstay was "Real Food". A week after I got altitude sickness I figured out my biggest faux pas was having almost nothing for breakfast. A week later I ate a turkey sandwich with a bunch of organic vegetables and a side of vegan oatmeal raisin co****s at 4am before hitting the trail head at 5am. I summitted with plenty energy to spare.

Interestingly enough ericb, I took a can of Red Bull with me and consumed it at the exact spot where I bonked the week before. This was my insurance policy. Well worth the premium.

I just had to know more about Red Bull. No, no way, that caffeine would keep me up for a week. I will just have to stick with powerbars, odwalla bars and non-caffeine gu packs (if anyone makes any anymore).

Breakfast on summit day was I believe two packages of instant oatmeal or it may have been ramen. A can of sardines accompanied either of those items. I did it as a backpack and this was from Trail Camp.

Of the three liters of liquid, one was cytomax.

At the summit, it was gorp, ****y, dried fruit and pecans and dry jack cheese. I was not feeling the altitude and was hungry (G)

Cytomax, Gu, Snickers (small ones), Oreo Barz. Cheese sticks, pepperoni on a roll. Haven't had much of a appetite lately (burned out on cheese/pepperoni?), so the last two trips I took spinach/feta croissants and was wanting more.

Like many others here I too have tried various energy bars but have just about given up on them. I would bring them along each time and just couldn't get myself to eat them or would only partially eat one. The chocolate kind would melt and get all mooshy and then resolidify. I think I still have a few at home that went out with me at least a half dozen times and came back. Of the ones I've tried though, the Cliff Bars seemed more preferable to me. These days I rely more on real food, energy gels, and energy drinks. For a dayhike I bring along a sandwich, some fruit (grapes, plums, an apple, or whatever), a couple packets of GU sports gel, and an energy drink or two (Red Bull, Hansens, ***e Adrenaline Rush, Venom, etc.). I also like the pudding and apple sauce lunch snacks, though I keep forgetting to bring a spoon.

You really gotta avoid caffeine whenever you're looking at extended physical exertion as you can expect a serious bonk a couple of hours later. Or if you're addicted, just a little--enough to keep the withdrawal headache at bay. Just don't tank up on the stuff. Your body needs real nutrition for extended hard work.

Just Say No to the Red Bull. It may be great for mental motivation but it's no good for the body.

Rick, they now sell applesauce and pudding in little tubes that you suck the stuff out of, they are a staple in my kids lunches and NO spoon.
You can also get yogurt and peanut butter this way.

I have taken those applesauce in a tube and they really worked out well. Good suggestion!
