Mt. Whitney Portal Store & Hostel Forums General Mt. Whitney Portal Store Message Board Snow at Horseshoe Meadow?

Hi Everybody,

I have a hike going out on Saturday, October 15th to the Horseshoe Meadow area. I am hoping to get some information about the snow level from anyone that has been there very recently. All of our destinations there are below 12,000 so we would like to know if this remains clear of snow. Recent photographs, 1st hand reports, or even trip reports would be fantastic.

I will post photos when we get back if anybody else is interested as well.

Spent the night there last night after a reunion in Mammoth, could not pass up the turn off as I was motoring along 95 with the moon up and my 82 year old pal . We had a few beers and howled with a coyote or it could have been another camper.
Hiked for a couple of hours after sunrise and saw maybe a snowball sized area of snow. With the warm up on its way I am positive there wont be any snow around the area. time for a nap

Are you sure that you're talking about Horseshoe Meadow, the one that's about 20 miles south of Mount Whitney, and not some other meadow somewhere?

yes punkin used to take over a hour to tackle that hill with my ol chevy . Now with a new one that steep drive just melts away.
One of my favorite spots to camp mid week . Its easier to move a heavy cooler from the truck to the bear contaner.

It took about 1:45 longer to make the summit on Columbus Day vs. a weekend earlier.
