I was up at Whitney Portal Campground when I day hiked and summited Whitney for the first time on August 25 (Whoohooo!). Loved the campground but wanted to warn people headed up there that there are tons of yellow jackets. 15 or 20 of the buzzing beasts came at me every time I pulled out food. And despite my best efforts to keep them out of the bear box, occasionally one or two flew out when I opened it. So if you have any way to repel yellow jackets and if you're camping at the Portal you might consider bringing it with you. I think I've seen yellow jacket traps in stores.
