I'm planning on doing this hike Saturday. I know it's 4,000 elevation gain, I want something fairly strenuous. Is the hike beautiful and a good one, like Alta Peak in Sequoia or Half Dome? I don't hear much about this hike for some reason.

The hike is not at all strenuous. It is very fun, actually. You are talking about the Don Cecil trail, T/H across from Sentinel campground. It is switchbacked well and you will experience all levels of vegetation.

I ran into a bear on the trail a while back, but that was in April and not October. The bear was more interested in termites and not me...

I will miss you by a few days, I am going to Kings Canyon starting Oct. 22.

Have fun, it's a great trail and not at all difficult, it is moderate at best. The water supply along the trail is limited so take what you are used to for a dry spell max of 5 miles one-way.

While you're there the trail up the opposite side of the canyon to the "other" lookout (Hotel Creek) is quicker but steeper.

I am hiking up Bubbs Creek and either will attempt Avalanche Pass or hike all the way to Forester Pass (3 days from Roads End).

Have fun!
