Our group of four will be attempting the Whitney Summit June 8th, 2011. We have overnight passes for June 7 & 8. Has anyone climbed recently who can give us the trail conditions for "the chute" above trail camp and the crest trail? My concern is mostly with the trail crest, I heard it can get really hairy up there this time of year. Your feedback will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

I hiked up along Trail Crest yesterday with the goal of making the summit, unfortunatey I had to turn around about a kilometer from the summit due to the weather (of course, today was sunny and beautiful, darnit!). The chute was covered with a thin layer of soft snow on top and crunchy/icy underneath. You'll need an ice axe and crampons to climb it (wow, what a tough climb!). Once you're up the chute, Trail Crest is fairly straightforward...snow and ice in certain spots...but the trail is clear and manageable. Make sure you check the weather board at the visitor center when you grab your permits. Have fun!

I made it to the top of the chute on Saturday May 28. The wind was really bad at that point so me and my party turned around. However, several people summitted the day before. They had told us crampons were not necessary. When I got up there it certainly didn't look like you needed them. Wish our trip had been tw days later. The weather would have been perfect today...

The speedy replies are much appreciated! I was watching the video playback on this site just now and looks like there wasn't a cloud in the sky today, unlike the past few days. Let's hope it stays that way, sure will pray that it does. But at that altitude weather can change drastically in a few moments. I've experienced unexpected weather in the Rockies just the same. Mount Whitney will always be around, I'm glad that both of you played it safe to conquer Whitney another day. Again, thank you very much for your feedback. Great info!
