I am now wondering if it would be better to start the JMT from the north or south in early June? Is more snow still further south or visa verse and would coming the opposite way allow time for more snow to melt? Thanks.

Well, you have a real problem. The first projection for opening of the Tioga Pass road just was posted. June 30th !!!!

On the Vermillion Valley Resort website, they are talking about the pass being open first/second week in June.

"The Reds Meadow Road to Devils Postpile National Monument and the Reds Meadow Valley is tentatively scheduled to open June 24th."
