My guess is the picture was taken just below Whitney's summit and New Army Pass is on the left in the background.

Looking at Rick's SmugMug album here , I would guess somewhere not far from Whitney's summit. It's the next picture after his shot of Jack's summit register signature, but well before other shots on the trail leading back to Trail Crest. I just can't figure the angle either. Maybe from one of the Needles? Bonus question: did Betsy get a Whitney summit in that day as well?

Correctamundo Mike (again)! It’s the western shoulder of Cirque Peak down by New Army Pass  The 1st photo was taken at 8X from the SW shoulder of Whitney with Mt Muir lined-up with the shoulder of Cirque Pk
