Bob,

Location question: it looks like their picture of the "Whitney Glacier" on the north side is at Arctic Lake looking east.

I assume they did not go over Whitney-Russell Col, drop down to Iceberg, and then up the Mountaineers Gulley, but instead just went straight up the north side, to the notch maybe, then to the summit?

edit: John Muir had done the first ascent of what we call the (east side) Mountaineers Route in 1873 but these people were coming from the west. I wonder how much they knew?

Also, compared to my picture below on Aug 17, 2010, it appears from some views that the glacier is about same size, although in one view smaller now.
