Three of us just completed Whitney last week in a day. Had a blast. Could any of you experienced climbers reccomend two more 14,000 plus peaks in the area that could be tackled in a 3 day period. Do we need permits ? Please tell us trail head locations and difficulty of trail. Where to camp ? Thanks folks

Mt. Langley from either the Horseshoe Meadows or Tuttle Creek trailheads. Horseshoe Meadows is a good trail. Tuttle is more or less a "route" that has been walked on to make it. No trail crew ever built a trail up there.

Mt. Muir off the Main Whitney Trail.

Mt. Russell out of Whitney Portal heading up the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek. The North Fork trail is pretty well marked but requires a bit more thought than the Main Whitney Trail.

Highly recommend Mt. Langley, a stunning hike from Horseshoe Meadows trailhead and over Old Army Pass (once snow is melted).

Question on Mt. Russell -- would that be a class II or class III hike? I too, would like to bag a couple more 14ers in CA, to add to my summits of Langley, White and Whitney. But I have no technical climbing skills.

The east ridge on Russell is a class 3 classic. You need a Whitney Zone permit. Camp at UBSL or do it in a day.

Tyndall via Shepherd Pass is a lot of miles and elevation, but the north rib is nice class 2 and 3. You could also consider the class 2 north ridge. You need a permit for overnight use, but they are much easier to get than the Whitney Zone. Camp at Anvil Camp.

Muir is a nice half-hour detour off the Whitney trail (class 3), but it's rare for anybody to make a trip just for Muir unless they are climbing a harder route on the east side.

Thanks for the info. guys. Is Mt. Langely open now? Someone told me that it's closed due to the big horn sheep. Starting from horeshoe medows, how long would it take us to go up and down and back to horseshoe medows? Is there good camping there ? Thanks in advance.

IMHO sandbag rating, fair amount of this 'class 2'...

It's not currently closed. There's good camping both at the trailhead, and along the trail if you choose to do it as an overnight. As to how long it will take - that's up to you, but can tell you it's about 18-20 miles, depending upon which route you take. It can be done as a long dayhike.

I did it last week via (Old) Army Pass - no snow on any part of the route.

There are recent threads on Langley - would suggest you do a search if you plan to do it.

Don't get me started on Tyndall's mythological Class 2 NW Ridge mad
Do yourself a favor and stick to the North Rib on this one!

You are confusing Mt. Langley with Mt. Williamson. Mt. Langley is open 24/7/365.

Currently, it's a bit more than a walk up. It really pays having someone who know the mountain to go with you. It will could cut an hour or two off the total time of a strictly noob trip.

There are tons of posts here about this trip, just use the search function.
