The boy and I have another father/son trip planned to the Mount Whitney area this weekend. Plans have us hitting Lone Pine early Saturday, grabbing permits and then up to Mount Pancake. After that its off to LPL or Meysan for some fishing/napping before dinner at WPS. We are attempting the MR Sunday at 0300 with RichardP. I hope he knows the way, because I get lost off trail easily. Hope to see some of you up there.........................DUG

Richard was fairly tired last night after an eighteen-hour day and only two hours of sleep the night before. Keeping up with him should be easier than usual. I'm taking a few rest days.

Richard was an incredible guide all day long. Since Bob wore him out on Friday we started at 0400. He had Mike lead most of the way and the boy did a decent job staying on route. No problems at the E ledges, maybe because it was still dark. We took plenty of breaks which I think helped me the most. The wind was blowing hard in our faces most of the morning. I was feeling pretty crappy after Iceburg, but Richard and Mike waited for me. When we got into the shaded part and I had the notch in sight I felt a lot better. The final 400 wasn't that hard, Mike asked a lot of questions and Richard had all the answers. I just followed Mike up. It was a very special summit for me today. It took us a little over nine hours to get to the top and I felt like the weakest link. We were worried about getting our grub from the store so Mike set a fast pace down (leaving us older folks several times) and Richard showed us three alternate routes that saved us some time. We hit the store with plenty of time to spare. I'll post pics later and I'm sure Richard will too......................................................DUG

Oh and NO Mt Pancake.  We had to deal with Mt Permit. Mike drew #8 of 8 in the mini lotto, but we still got our permit....................................DUG

Doug, congratulations, sounds like you had a great trip. Is there any snow/ice on the Mountaineers Route up higher that would require an axe or crampons at this point?

Looking through Richard's pics you can see where some ice is starting to form on the final 400. I barely remember it and it wasn't a big deal on our trip........................DUG
