Friday the 13th gave us shooting stars and fantastic weather. My son Jake and I did an MR-MT loop. This was Jake's first time on Whitney. He seemed to know where to go each step of the way and I was chasing him all day. Words can't describe how absolutely cool this day was for both of us.

Proud dad. Son was just as proud that dad was able to keep up with him (sort of):

Goofing around in the north fork just above the ledges:

Jake scrambled up the final 400 like a bighorn. We went left side of the snow field while there was a guided group on the right side boulders.

Almost down the MT while enjoying the ice cold switchbacks spring water:

A great day, can't wait for the next one. But that project is already in the planning stages, the whole family next time!

Way to go! Hard to believe it has been nine years since my son and I did Whitney (three-day backpack via the Main Trail to Trail Camp, summit day two, back day three).

Since then, we've upped our state highpoint count to 40 (for him) and 42 (for me). Treasured memories on every one of them...

Hi James and Jake,
Congratulations.
It is nice to have someone you can compete together or share the good time together. James, please enjoy the moment while you have a slight advantage over Jake. He will leave you behind very soon. You are lucky to have a son who is interested in what you like.
They are nice father and son pictures.

Thank you for sharing with us.

James way cool brah! There is no greater blessing than spending time with our kids! Father and son Team, man wouldn't it be cool if he fell in love with the sport like us! That's my prayer that my little Whitney some day says, Daddy when are we going hiking again I can't wait!

Hey man, its great to see two made it up and back safely. I talked to you on the notch. I was heading down while you two were on the way up. I said that I took the right side of the chute and was pretty scared. Congrats on your summit. Your son definitley has no fear!!

Congrats James! It looks like you guys had an awesome time.

A month ago I took my Dad up the main trail for his first time and we had an amazing time as well. I hope to one day take my son up there too when he's old enough. What a great place to make memories with the fam!! I love hearing these stories.

Thank you everyone, it was a memorable trip. Ryan, nice you took your father up the trail. That would be something to have 3 generations on the mountain at the same time. You have me thinking...

And hopefully next summer we have a mother-daughter team up there as well, that would be very special.

Glad to see the father-son teams getting out into the backcountry. My son and I have been doing a bunch this year and it's been a lot more fun than EPICs I was doing with my old partner. We are penciled in for the MR this weekend with some guy named RichardP. Rumor is he has made the trip before so we should be in good hands. If you see RichardP and a skinny kid waiting on an old fat guy, that's us.

Congrats to the father-son teams and to all those who make spending time with family a priority........................DUG

Great job, James! Glad everything came together. (I'm sure the trip probably helped your son with his 8-mile run to the beach next day rather than hindered.)
