Hi all, does anyone know the story behind why the brass survey marker at the Mt. Whitney summit says, "CALIFORNIA DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS CL FWY 8 1967"? I assume that perhaps it's so it doesn't get stolen as a souvenir? Hopefully there's a better story than that...... I would attach a photo, but I do not have the technological skills. smile

Mountain tops are used for survey control so you can find city, state, county, power company, USGS , NGS and DOD just to name a few, also most will have a tie so the mark can be relaced ( old days we would do a trick map problem and use the reference mark)
To find the story of most USGS/NPS marks look up data sheets on the NGS.gov site hundreds of thousands of mark history , search can be by topo map or point ID , sometimes it takes a few clicks to get the results out of a list that you need to select the points you want
