Six days before this tragedy, I was hiking up the Main Trail and encountered climbers who had just ascended the East Face from their camp at Iceberg Lake. They had intended to descend the MR and pack up camp, but bailed when they further assessed the risky conditions (ice/snow) on the MR above Iceberg Lake.
