new member here. just joined. got an email two days ago from rec.gov canceling my Whitney Trail reservation for 6/14-16. says closure is effective at Whitney Portal from 5/31-6/22 due to “winter snow melt/flooding”. my reservation for the campground though 6/10-14 has not been canceled. any insight anyone?!?! surprised it’s not a topic of convo here. this sucks…….

Part of the Family Campground is closed...I don't know the specifics, but there has been a post (previously) discussing it...

People were camping there the other day when I rode by...

bmurph,

I have a Mt Whitney permit in the time period you mention, 5/31-6/22, but there has been no indication of cancellation. In fact, on rec.gov one can currently make a reservation for a permit on some of those dates.

Campsites 42,43, and 44 are currently closed in the Family Campground. At campsite 42, what appears to be a spring is flowing quite briskly and floods the campsite. The water crosses the road one takes to get to sites 43 and 44. No occupants at 43 and 44 have made it a good spot to collect firewood!

Hi Just checked Rec.gov I often see Warning Notes on the Page I only see notes about closed roads that should be checked.
In fact we are seeeing a decline in the run off, snow level is just below Lone Pine Lake The trail is covered with snow and downed trees and very few making it past 12,000'

The north fork ( mountaineers route) is a mess with snow bridges breaking in the first canyon.

I've scoured the internet and you tube for any information within the last 5 to 7 days and only found videos uploaded 2, 3 and4 weeks old. I just gota permit to climb for tommorow and wondering if it's even possible to attempt?! If so what route would be my best option and accessing through portal or standard entrance. Any advice would be appreciative on this matter. Does anyone know if anyone has been able to summit in a day tbisnopeneing season?
Warmest Regards Joe

Might be late on the reply but North Fork is not a safe option until dirt shows in the first canyon.
Yes people summit in a day but these are not hikers that hike a few times a year these are experienced climbers the most likely climb all year and all conditions, plus many backcountry ski folks do day hikes ,skin up and ski down.
