Hi Paul,
I was planning to be at the Portal this weekend, but will likely abort (for the first time in many years) due to the weather. I live in Davis and it is a long drive. In the Sierras, whether its driving, camping, or tramping about, I never seem to do well when challenged by the Weather Gods. However visiting friends and eating giant pancakes is a strong attraction, so I am still hoping there is a change in the forecast. If I come, I will be at campsite #7 on Saturday night, not my usual #15.
For a similar reason I was a no show at the Climb for Heroes, as it involved nearly a 1000 mile drive with a discouraging weather prediction. Glad to see it will happen now on June 23.
When PCT hiker Kristine returns to the trail, she will soon be confronted with crossing Woods Creek (where the bridge washed out two years ago), soon followed by the South Fork of the Kings River crossing (where "Strawberry" Morita drowned two years ago).
Again this year the PCT crowd is going to have to deal with some potentially brutal crossings, and others hopefully can learn something from their experiences. Current alterations of my summer backcountry plans are almost entirely based on anticipated water crossing conditions. Drowning remains the #1 way to get killed in SEKI.
Have a nice Memorial Day holiday.
Jim
