Hi everybody...

Why was Mike able to post at a time when he should have still been on Split? Did he leave his companions behind?

Hi Doug,
I am trying to gather information on how people are traveling around the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains - besides climbing over them! Has anyone taken public transit or carpooled? I know parking is limited at the Portal so are there other alternatives besides driving alone? And is anyone using them? What about getting back from the other side? Thanks for any info you and your friends can supply.

Hi Good news you can now go from Lone Pine to the Valley in one day, well for sure Mon. Tues. Thur. Fri. Not sure if the other bus service to Bishop/Mammoth gets to Mammoth on time.
Now if you plan on leaving a car in the Portal for says 3 months and one in the Valley Should you put a sign on it saying you could be parking here if I didn't? Thanks Doug

Hi Doug, I am planning on hiking the JMT this July. May I leave my car at the portal for 3 weeks or is there a better (safer)place?

The long term parking at the portal has worked for me, up in the trees, or in the overflow lot. Make sure your car is clean (no food or other intersting smells) and nothing you can see through the windows would interest a bear or human critter. So no French Fries under the seat, no spilled burger juice in the seat fabric, etc

Same is true for long term parking at Tuolumne Meadows. I've left it there the last three summers. I never felt good about leaving my car on the lot near Curry Village down in Yosemite Valley (hot, dusty, too many people, and you need a permit sticker on it, so no car cover)

Im doing the whole jmt this summer, is there anything we need to do in advance to leave a car at the Whitney parking lot? is it pretty safe as far as break ins, vandals or theft?

thanks

make sure the vehicle has zero food smell (vacuum the old fries and cookie crumbs out of every corner), bleach the trunk if it has a funky smell, hide anything that may even remotely look like a food container even if it isn't, and bring some sun shades for the windshield

Hello. I am doing the High Sierra Trail in Sept. I am having a friend drop me off at Crescent Meadow but need a ride back to Visalia after exiting at Whitney Portal. Any ideas how to get back to the west side?

Best way to Los Angeles is as follows. Have options from there.

(1) Hitchhike to Lone Pine from the Portal (or pay for a shuttle).

(2) ESTA bus from Lone Pine to Lancaster. Limited schedule. http://www.estransit.com

(3) Metrolink from Lancaster to many points in LA. Including Burbank airport, but also downtown LA/Amtrak station (Union Station). http://www.metrolinktrains.com . You can take the Antelope Valley Line from Lancaster directly to Union Station. Need to change if you want to go elsewhere in LA. Can get Flyaway Bus from Union Station to LAX.

The Horseshoe Meadows Road is broken - as in washed out in a couple of places. No ETA for when Inyo Co might get around to fixing it - so it is closed, locked gates at the bottom. So don't count on getting a ride down to Lone Pine from Horseshoe Meadow trailhead for some time - like months....
